Jan Braai National Tour Recap
The National Braai Day initiative positions Heritage Day as South Africa’s annual day of cultural celebration, inviting the country to unite around fires and wave our flag.
In 2018, Jan Braai celebrated Heritage Day with the National Braai Tour; a week-long, countrywide adventure with members of the public. The route goes up the Southern Cape coast, through the Garden Route and Eastern Cape.
Full of tasty braais, epic sightseeing and great company, the Tour was a true highlight for anyone lucky enough to go along for the ride. As a proud sponsor, Freddy Hirsch has the daily details on this epic journey of culture and flavour.
Day 1: Saturday 8 September – Cullinan Hotel, Cape Town
Participants arrived and registered at Tsogo Sun Cullinan in Cape Town. They received goodie bags containing a potjie, the brand new JanBraai braai grid, tongs and gloves, Freddy Hirsch spices, Spur sauces, Cerebos salts, Banks cooking utensils and more. Everyone also gets kitted out in Hi-Tec gear for a week of adventure.
The 2018 National Braai Tour officially kicked off as 200 happy braaiers made their way to Struisbaai in a convoy lead by a huge County Fair truck.
Day 2: Sunday 9 September – Struisbaai Campsite, Struisbaai
An incredible start to the National Braai Tour 2018 was followed up by a perfect first day on the road. The teams enjoyed coffee and pies at the Peregrine Farm Stall. Freshly caught stompneus in Struisbaai was served for for a midday snack, along with peri-peri County Fair chicken sosaties.
In the evening, the teams set up their braais and enjoyed the sunset with Devils Peak beer and Zandvliet Chardonnay. Later, everyone visited the Sea Shack for a massive seafood buffet and a bit of a party.
Day 3: Monday 10 September – Kam’Bati River Resort, Swellendam
It was a beautiful day in the world’s most beautiful country. The National Braai Tour participants spent the afternoon and evening on the banks of the Breede River, sipping Zandvliet Wines and enjoying the serene surroundings.
For lunch, they enjoyed the Freddy Hirsch-spiced Jan Braai wors. Dinner was a delicious chicken curry with freshly-made roosterkoek. The setting and weather were absolutely perfect for a day around the fire.
Day 4: Tuesday 11 September – ATKV Hartenbos, Hartenbos
It was a cold, misty start to the day. After a dose of caffeine thanks to Coffee Rock Roastery, Day 4 kicked off smoothly. The team made their way to Delish, a fantastic restaurant in Heidelberg owned by a good friend of Jan’s. Lamb burgers were on the menu!
The overnight stop was ATKV-oorde’s Hartenbos site; an awesome venue right on the beach, with live music from Me and Mr Green to cap off a wonderful evening.
Day 5: Wednesday 12 September – Sanparks Ebb and Flow Rest Camp, Wildernis
After a lively evening thanks to the live band, it was a slow start to Day 5. After a huge Mama Themba pap and curry mince breakfast, the teams made their way along the N2 to the beautiful Wildernis. The overnight stop was South African National Parks Ebb & Flow Rest Camp – one of the most scenic spots in the world.
On the menu was Freddy Hirsch-spiced JanBraai Wors for lunch and paella for dinner.
Day 6: Thursday 13 September – Sanparks, Storms River
The Garden Route always delivers, which is why the National Braai Tour keeps going back! After an amazing Mamma Themba pap and chili relish, the team detoured into Knysna to make the world’s newest brunch craze - boerewors croissants with apricot chutney. Try it!
Day 6’s overnight stop was South African National Parks Storms River Rest Camp, where teams braaied a peri peri chicken flatties. It was the last night of the Tour and the fires burned bright and late into night.
Day 7: Friday 14 September – Giant Flag, Nelson Mandela Bay
The last day of an awesome week of travel, braai and nation building. After leaving Storms River for PE, the teams had a quick braai at the world’s biggest South African flag before making their way to the final destination.
And that capped off a wonderful week of celebrating, sightseeing, braaiing, camping and adventuring.
